After training in Colorado Springs since July, four-time NCAA champion Samuel Chelanga (Nike) has opted to join the American Distance Project. Kenyan-born Chelanga, who became a U.S. citizen in 2015, is a four-time NCAA champion and holds the NCAA 10,000-meter record at 27:08.49. Winning back-to-back NCAA cross country titles in 2009 and 2010 and titles in the 10,000m and 5,000m in 2010 and 2011, respectively, Chelanga made a quick impact as an American winning the U.S. 10-Mile and US 12k championships in 2015 and was runner-up in the U.S. 20k in both 2015 and 2016. Chelanga narrowly missed making the U.S. Olympic team in the 10,000-meters finishing 6th and having to settle for the alternate’s spot. He holds Personal Bests of 7:45.21 for 3k, 13:04.35 for 5k, 27:08.39 for 10k and 61:04 for the Half Marathon. Chelanga and ADP teammate steeplechase Olympian Hillory Bor (U.S. Army) will join Bor’s Army and Olympic teammates Leonard Korir and Shadrack Kipchirchir competing against a stellar field at Sunday’s U.S. 5k Championships in Providence, R.I. The field includes two-time steeplechase Olympian Don Cabral, Eric Jenkins, Chris Derrick, and Ryan Hill.
