Chelanga Takes World's Best 10k & Big Pay Day


Sam Chelanga (Nike) waited until 9k to make a hard move on a stacked field to win the World's Best 10k on Sunday in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Chelanga was able to break away from a pack including Olympic Bronze Medalist Thomas Longsoiwa, Stephen Sambu and runner-up Phillip Langat to take the title. Chelanga, the first American to win the race in its 20-year history, also partnered with Aliphine Bolton to win the team title for Team USA in the North American, Central American, and Caribbean Athletic Association (NACAC) 10k Road Race Cup with the duo splitting the $20,000 prize in addition to Chelanga's $15,000 overall win. In other competition, Joe Gray (Merrell) departed from the track, trail and roads taking his speed to the World Snowshoe Championships in Saranac Lake, NY for the win, while Elkanah Kibet (US Army) finished 4th at the Gasparailla Half Marathon in Tampa, FL.
