Chelanga Finishes 11th At World Cross Country To Lead Team USA To 5th

Sam Chelanga (Nike) ran a smart race moving up through the field after a blistering opening pace left its mark on a stellar field in the men's 10,000-meters at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships held last week in Kampala, Uganda. Chelanga was placed 26th after the opening 2k loop, which eclipsed the winning 2k relay leg time of Asbel Kiprop 5:12 to 5:19. Chelanga patiently picked off runners to finish 11th, earning an IAAF World Outdoor Championships qualifying standard for his top-15 performance and leading Team USA to a 5th-place finish, a mere 8-points out of bronze. Leonard Korir (US Army) and Shadrack Kipchirchir (US Army) contributed with 20th and 21st placing, while Stanley Kebenei (Nike) closed out Team USA scoring with a solid 26th-place after leading early on. Ethiopia won with 21-points, edging Kenya by a point, with Uganda in third with 72-points Eritrea in 4th with 75-points and Team USA in 5th with 78-points.
